IFS‑Informed EMDR: A relational way through clinical stuck points.

The framework

Crystal Hines’s IFS‑Informed EMDR framework integrates trauma reprocessing with an IFS‑informed understanding of protective parts. EMDR gives the work structure. The IFS‑informed stance helps the therapist meet what surfaces without treating protection as failure.

How it works

Two modalities. One clinical map.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an eight‑phase approach to trauma treatment. Internal Family Systems (IFS) understands the mind as a system of parts, including protectors that work to keep painful material out of reach. IFS‑Informed EMDR brings those ideas into one usable framework for the moments when trauma processing activates protection.

The therapist does not abandon EMDR or push harder against the client. The therapist notices the protective response, gets curious about its job, and builds enough consent and safety to decide what the work can hold next.

For the formal models, see EMDRIA’s overview of the eight phases of EMDR therapy and the IFS Institute’s distinction between IFS‑informed and IFS‑trained learning.

Why they work together

EMDR reaches the memory. IFS helps the therapist stay in relationship with the system protecting it.

EMDR can bring unresolved material into contact. That activation can also bring forward the strategies that once helped a person survive: avoidance, numbness, distraction, looping, intellectualizing, or dissociation.

An IFS‑informed stance changes what the therapist does next. Protection becomes meaningful clinical information. Curiosity replaces confrontation. The protocol still matters, but it is no longer applied as though the client’s protective system were getting in the way.

The result is fidelity without rigidity: a clearer way to hold both the EMDR process and the person moving through it.

What happens at a stuck point

Resistance becomes clinical information.

The framework changes the question from “How do I get the client moving again?” to “What is protecting the client right now, and what does it need us to understand?”

  1. 01

    Activation

An EMDR target brings distressing material into contact.

  2. 02

    Protection

Avoidance, looping, shutdown, distraction, or dissociation may appear.

  3. 03

    Relationship

The therapist gets curious about the protective response instead of pushing past it.

  4. 04

    Processing

With consent and enough safety, the work can continue at the pace the system can hold.

The origin

Crystal kept hearing the same question: what do I do when EMDR gets stuck?

Crystal came to this integration from both sides. She had completed advanced IFS and EMDR training, worked for years with complex trauma, and knew the realities of accessing deep professional education while building a practice and raising a family.

After the pandemic, therapists brought her a repeated clinical problem. EMDR had activated something important, protection took over, and the clinician did not know how to proceed without either abandoning the target or pushing against the client.

Crystal developed a framework that made the integration teachable. She presented “An IFS‑Informed Approach to Redefining Resistance in EMDR Therapy” at the 2025 EMDRIA Conference. Clinicians then asked for a course, a certificate, and a path into consultation. The training ladder grew from the demand she was already seeing in practice, consultation, and teaching.

What makes it different

You are not left to translate between two separate systems.

Learning IFS and learning EMDR separately does not automatically show a therapist how to use them together. The hard part is the translation: when to follow the EMDR phase, when to slow down, how to recognize protection, what to ask, and how to keep the work relational without losing clinical structure.

Crystal’s framework teaches that translation directly. The integration is carried through the EMDR process instead of added as an occasional technique. Therapists study one coherent map, practice it in consultation, and can keep developing inside the same language from introductory course to consultant training.

That complete, scaffolded IFS‑Informed EMDR pathway is available through Align, taught from the framework’s source.

“knowledgeable, creative and compassionate as a trainer without overcomplicating two modalities that are easy to overcomplicate. It all felt very accessible and fluid.”

Why the wording matters

“IFS‑informed” names the training honestly.

IFS Institute controls its formal training and certification pathway. Align teaches Crystal’s IFS‑informed integration with EMDR. Align’s programs do not replace IFS Institute Level 1, 2, or 3 training and do not confer IFS Institute certification.

The same distinction applies to EMDR credentials. Align’s courses, consultation, certification cohort, and CIT program can support clinicians along those paths. EMDRIA Certified Therapist and EMDRIA Approved Consultant remain credentials with their own requirements and independent approval.

IFS‑Informed EMDR questions

The distinctions that matter before you enroll.

What is IFS-Informed EMDR?

IFS-Informed EMDR integrates EMDR with an IFS-informed understanding of protective parts. At Align, you learn Crystal Hines’s clinical framework for that integration. EMDR provides the structure for trauma processing. The IFS-informed stance helps the therapist recognize, respect, and work with protective responses that arise during that process.

Is IFS-Informed EMDR a separate therapy credential?

No. Align’s IFS-Informed EMDR training teaches Crystal’s clinical framework. EMDRIA Certified Therapist and IFS Institute certification are separate credentials conferred by those organizations.

Do I need IFS training before learning the framework?

No IFS training is required for the $47 mini-course or the 12-month certification cohort. The integration is taught inside the program. You must have completed EMDR Basic Training for advanced EMDR education; the Consultant-in-Training program requires current EMDRIA certification.

Where should I start?

Choose the $47 mini-course for an introduction, the six-hour TTI course for EMDRIA CEs, Beyond the Basics for complex systems, the 12-month cohort for a supported path toward EMDRIA certification, or the CIT program if you are already EMDRIA Certified and ready to develop as a consultant.

Can this training replace official IFS Institute training?

No. Align teaches an IFS-informed integration with EMDR. It does not replace IFS Institute Level 1, 2, or 3 training and does not confer IFS Institute certification.
